The WMRC is a surgical trainee-led research network within the West Midlands. It was set up by a group of surgical registrars in 2007 with the help and support of Professor Dion Morton. Our aim is to deliver high-quality, mutli-centre clinical research that will change clinical practice. You can see our precise document explaining some of the how’s and why’s here.
The WMRC aims to capitalise on the natural network formed by Surgical trainees rotating between hospitals in the West Midlands region. This has allowed us to set up several multicentre studies within the region. Details of current and completed studies can be found here.
Other regions have shown a great interest in our group and have now formed similar networks within their own regions. Word has spread beyond general surgery and there are now trainee-led collaboratives in most specialities within medicine. A list of regional and national groups acan be found on our links page.
The developing relationships with such groups outside of the West Midlands Region has allowed us to deliver national multi-centre trials (eg ROSSINI). In addition, each year a nationwide audit is delivered through the developing national collaborative network, details of which can be found here.
We are also fortunate to have the support of the University of Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit. Now one of 5 surgical trials units nationally developed with the support of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. You can read more about the recent changes to surgical research here.
